Good to Know
When We Won't Whiten
How It Works
Teeth with a yellow tinge tend to respond best. Grey stains take longer to lighten, and we'll explain what to expect.
A Dental Examination First
We look for decay and gum disease and make a note of crowns, veneers or fillings, as these won't change colour.
A Scan for Your Trays
No putty, just a quick 3D scan. From it, we make trays that fit your teeth precisely.
Fitting and Instructions
Your trays are fitted, we show you how much gel to apply and for how long, and your starting shade is recorded.
Whitening at Home
Typically two to three weeks, with the trays worn for a short while daily.
Review
Your new shade is compared with your starting point, and we discuss how to maintain it.
Dentist Whitening or a Shop Kit?
What each may contain, and who may supply it, is set by UK law.
| Feature | Dentist whitening | Shop kits |
|---|---|---|
| Gel strength | Professional-strength gel, up to the UK maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide | Limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide at most |
| What it does | Lightens tooth colour from the inside | Mostly lifts stains on the surface |
| Trays | Custom-made from a 3D scan | Generic one-size trays, or none |
| Before you start | Teeth and gums checked by your dentist | None |
| Who can provide it | A dentist only, or a hygienist or therapist working to a dentist's prescription | Available in shops. In the UK, whitening by beauty salons is illegal |
How Long It Lasts
Typically a year or more, depending on your diet, what you drink and whether you smoke. Hold on to your trays and add fresh gel whenever you need a top-up.
