Dental Bridges in Edinburgh: A Fixed Tooth, Without Surgery

A bridge fills a gap with a false tooth anchored to its neighbours. We make ours from a digital iTero scan taken here in Comely Bank, so there's no putty, and many need little or no drilling.

Resin-retained bridges start at £550 a unit; conventional bridges are £680 a unit. Dental plan members pay 10% less.2

Which Bridge?

We choose the design by looking at the gap's position, how many teeth have gone and how strong the neighbouring teeth are.

Maryland (Resin) Bridge

The false tooth has a slim wing that bonds behind the tooth next to it. It needs little or no drilling and is often our first choice for one front tooth.

Conventional Bridge

The false tooth sits between crowns placed on its neighbours. Stronger at the back of the mouth, but those neighbours must be shaped for crowns.

Immediate Bridge

Fitted the same day as the extraction, this resin-retained bridge means no gap while the socket heals.

Long-Term Provisional

A temporary bridge for while implants heal or you're deciding, from £450.

Implant Bridge

A row of teeth carried on two or more implants, leaning on none of your own teeth. The best fit when several adjacent teeth are missing.

Repairs

If the supporting teeth are sound, a loose bridge can often be cleaned and cemented back on (£110).

Bridge or Implant?

Each gives you a fixed tooth; the difference is what they need from its neighbours.

Resin-retained bridges are quick, good value and gentle on adjacent teeth, though the wing may now and then come unstuck and need rebonding
Conventional bridges are strong, but the teeth on each side need crowns, something we prefer not to do to healthy teeth
An implant is self-supporting and preserves the bone in the gap without any work on other teeth, though it means minor surgery and takes longer
We use your examination and X-ray to see what the neighbouring teeth can support

How It Works

1

Examination and X-Ray

We look at the gap, its neighbours and your bite, and take an X-ray of the roots and bone that would support the bridge.

2

Preparation and Scan

A resin-retained bridge usually needs only a scan. For a conventional one, we shape the supporting teeth under local anaesthetic, scan them on our iTero and fit a protective temporary.

3

Fitting

We try the bridge in, check its fit, colour and bite, and then bond or cement it.

4

Review

We confirm your bite has settled and you can clean beneath the bridge.

How Long a Bridge Lasts

Cared for well, a bridge usually lasts 10 to 15 years, frequently more. Three things shorten that: decay along the margins of the supporting teeth, gum disease around those teeth, and heavy grinding. The false tooth seldom gives trouble; our focus is protecting the teeth that hold it.

Because a resin-retained bridge depends on bonding to enamel, it works best on sound teeth and a lighter bite. Should the wing come away, we can usually clean and rebond it (£110).

Was the tooth lost a while back? Bone beneath a gap gradually shrinks, and that can leave a small space below the false tooth. A dental implant preserves the bone, and we'll tell you if it's the better long-term choice.

Looking After a Bridge

Each day, clean beneath the false tooth with superfloss or an interdental brush, as trapped food there leads to decay
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, focusing on the gum line around the bridge
Keep up hygiene visits: the bridge depends on healthy gums around its supporting teeth
If you grind, wear a night guard
Something feeling loose or catching? Come in soon, since a loose bridge caught early can often be recemented
