What to Do Now

What you can do before we see you.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Pick it up by the crown, never the root. Rinse it briefly in milk and, if you can, put it back into its socket; if not, keep it in milk. Be seen within the hour.

Severe Toothache

Ordinary painkillers can help, taken as the pack directs. Keep off very hot or cold food and phone us to be seen.

Swelling

Phone us that day. Go to A&E if it's spreading fast or making it hard to breathe or swallow.

Broken Tooth or Filling

Save any fragments and rinse with warm water. Sugar-free gum will cover a sharp edge meanwhile.

Lost Crown

Store the crown safely and bring it in. Don't try to refit it with glue.

Bleeding After an Extraction

Bite firmly for 20 minutes on clean, damp gauze or tissue. If it carries on, phone us.

The Emergency Visit

Our first job is easing your pain before you leave.

1

Book or Call

We see emergencies on the day, Monday to Friday, registered with us or not. If you're new, you can book online right now.

2

Find the Cause

We examine the tooth, take an X-ray if needed and tell you plainly what's wrong.

3

Relieve the Pain

Most often there and then: a dressing or temporary filling, settling an infection, or beginning root canal treatment.

4

A Plan for What's Next

We set out the options and fees for a lasting repair, and you decide without pressure.

Emergencies We See Every Week

Not sure it counts as an emergency? Give us a ring and we'll help you decide.

Toothache and Abscesses

A throbbing ache, swelling or a nasty taste, often from deep decay or a crack in the tooth. What to do about an abscess

Broken or Chipped Teeth

Anything from a minor chip to a split tooth. Bring along any pieces you find. What to do about a broken tooth

Lost Crowns and Fillings

We cement them back or replace them, protecting the tooth meanwhile.

Knocked-Out Teeth

Speed is everything. Use the first-aid steps above and reach us within the hour.

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Sore, puffy gum around a wisdom tooth, at times with a stiff jaw as well. About wisdom teeth

Implant, Bridge or Denture

A loose implant crown, broken bridge or cracked denture. Does your jaw ache or click? Jaw pain and TMJ

Do I Need Antibiotics?

In most cases, no. The cause of most toothache is something antibiotics can't fix, and you only need them if an infection is spreading or you're feeling unwell. What brings lasting relief is treating the tooth: a filling, root canal treatment, or taking it out if it can't be saved.

Out of Hours

We're open 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, here in Comely Bank. At other times in Scotland, call NHS 24 on 111; dental plan members also get out-of-hours care through their plan. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or affects your eye, call 999 or go to A&E.

Emergency Fees

An emergency appointment is £75 if you're registered with us and £99 if you aren't. Dental plan members pay nothing.2
