Gum Disease Treatment in Edinburgh: Bleeding Gums, Treated Properly

In Comely Bank, Katie Ventisei, our dental hygienist and therapist, assesses gingivitis and periodontitis, treats them in stages and keeps them under control, with Airflow cleaning and a plan to stop them returning.

Hygiene visit £90. Deep clean £180. Gum treatment £167 a stage, across four stages. Dental plan members have hygiene visits included and pay 10% less for the rest.2

The Signs

Until it's well advanced, gum disease seldom hurts. Watch for these early signs, which are easy to overlook.

Bleeding When You Brush

Gums that are healthy don't bleed. Pink in the sink means gingivitis is starting, not that you should brush more softly.

Red, Swollen or Tender Gums

The gum line turns inflamed where plaque collects.

Bad Breath or a Bad Taste

It comes from bacteria beneath the gum; mouthwash just covers it up.

Receding Gums

Teeth look longer as sensitive roots become exposed.

Loose or Drifting Teeth

As bone is lost, teeth can shift and gaps appear at the front.

Gums and General Health

Research links periodontitis with diabetes, heart disease and complications in pregnancy. While gums stay inflamed, implants and diabetes are both harder to keep under control.

Gingivitis vs Periodontitis

One cause, two stages, each treated differently.

Gingivitis: the gums are inflamed but no bone has been lost. A professional clean and better home care reverse it completely
Periodontitis: the inflammation has spread to the bone, and pockets form where the gum comes away from the tooth. Lost bone won't regrow, but the disease can be halted
It worsens, and responds more slowly, with smoking, diabetes, stress and certain medicines
Pocket measurements around each tooth show which stage you're at and how far it has progressed

How It Works

1

Assessment

We measure the gum around each tooth and use X-rays to see the bone. You come away with a gum score and a straight answer on where things stand.

2

Hygiene Phase

We clean thoroughly above the gum and just beneath it, using Airflow to clear plaque and stain, then show you on your own teeth the home routine that will make the real difference.

3

Gum Treatment in Stages

If you have periodontitis, the pockets beneath the gum are deep cleaned with local anaesthetic, one section of the mouth at a time, in four stages (£167 each).

4

Review and Maintenance

We measure the pockets again to check healing, then see you for hygiene every three months, since gum disease returns as soon as plaque does.

Why It's Worth Treating

More adults lose teeth to gum disease than to anything else, yet most of it can be prevented. Caught early, gingivitis clears up entirely. Once it has become periodontitis, lost bone stays lost, but the disease can be halted and the teeth kept for decades.

It also underpins every other treatment. Implants depend on healthy gums, crowns and bridges are only as sound as the teeth holding them, and Invisalign moves teeth through healthy bone. So in any plan we write, gum treatment comes first.

Day to day, gum treatment at the practice is carried out by Katie Ventisei, our hygienist and therapist. Both dental plans include hygiene visits, and members get 10% off the deep clean and each gum treatment stage.

At Home

Most important of all: clean between your teeth daily, using interdental brushes that fit the size of your gaps
Brush along the gum line twice daily for two minutes, using an electric toothbrush if possible
If your gums bleed, carry on gently rather than stopping; proper cleaning settles it in a week or two
Give up smoking: it slows gum healing and masks the bleeding that would otherwise warn you
With diabetes, good blood sugar control helps your gums, and healthy gums in turn help your blood sugar
Don't skip your three-monthly visits; disease restarts in the gaps between them
