White Fillings in Edinburgh: Fillings That Match Your Teeth

Every filling we place in Comely Bank is composite, matched to the surrounding tooth and layered until it blends in. Done in one visit, removing as little of the tooth as we can.

White fillings are priced by size: £170 small, £220 medium and £250 large. Dental plan members pay 10% less.2

What a White Filling Fixes

Because composite bonds to the tooth, it can do more than fill cavities.

New Cavities

We clear the decay and seal the tooth with a filling in its own shade.

Replacing Metal Fillings

Cracked, leaking or simply noticeable amalgam fillings, swapped for tooth-coloured composite.

Chips and Worn Edges

Minor chips and worn biting edges built back up in composite. On front teeth, this is composite bonding.

Large Build-Ups

When much of a tooth has gone, we rebuild it in one piece, either ahead of a crown or onlay or as the finished restoration (£350).

Deep Cavities

When decay reaches near the nerve, a biocompatible liner (£60) shields it. If the cavity extends under the gum, deep margin elevation (£55) lets us achieve a good seal.

Sensitive, Worn Necks

Notches worn at the gum line by brushing and acid, sealed over so they no longer sting.

Filling, Onlay or Crown?

We always aim to save as much of your own tooth as possible.

Small or medium cavity, sturdy walls all round: a filling
A back tooth damaged on its biting surface but with intact walls: a ceramic onlay
A tooth with much of its structure gone, or one that's root filled: a crown
A front tooth chipped or worn down, not decayed: composite bonding

How It Works

1

Examination and X-Ray

An X-ray picks up decay between teeth and beneath old fillings well before you feel it. We show you what we've found and what it needs.

2

Numbing and Preparation

We numb the tooth, remove the decay or old filling and keep the tooth dry, which is the key to a lasting bond.

3

Layered Composite

We add composite in fine layers matched to the tooth's shade, hardening each with a light.

4

Shaped and Polished

We sculpt the filling to fit your bite and polish it. You can eat once the numbness has gone.

How Long Fillings Last

Placed well, a composite filling usually lasts five to ten years, and frequently more. The smallest last longest; bigger ones take more of the biting load and are likelier to need an onlay or crown eventually. Grinding, frequent sugary snacks and decay around the edges all shorten their life, and your dental examinations pick these up early.

Do metal fillings need replacing? Being metal isn't a reason on its own, and a sound amalgam filling can be left alone. If one is cracked, leaking, decayed underneath or visible when you smile, it's worth changing, and we'll tell you which applies at your examination. Our guide to replacing metal fillings explains more.

Adult care here is private, and all adult fillings are tooth-coloured, wherever the tooth sits. Our plan members' children are treated on the NHS, which avoids amalgam for under-15s unless strictly necessary, so their fillings are usually tooth-coloured as well.

Looking After a Filling

Hold off eating until the numbness fades, so you don't catch your cheek or lip
Mild sensitivity to cold for a week or two is expected; if it's getting worse, that isn't, so let us know
If it feels high when you bite together, come in and we'll adjust it within minutes
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth, which is where new decay begins
If you grind, a night guard protects your fillings as well as your teeth
