Dental Hygienist in Edinburgh: Hygiene and Gum Health

Katie Ventisei, our dental hygienist and therapist, looks after cleaning, Airflow polishing and gum treatment here in Comely Bank. Healthy gums are where every good smile starts.

A hygiene visit is £90, or £120 with air polishing. Both are part of our dental plans.

What Happens at a Hygiene Visit

Most visits take 30 minutes; a deep clean takes 60.

Gum Check

Measuring around each tooth picks up the first signs of gum disease.

Scaling

Hardened tartar is cleared from above the gum and just beneath it.

Air Polishing

Warm water, air and a fine powder lift away plaque and staining.

Your Plan at Home

You leave knowing which areas need attention and which brushes suit you.

Air Polishing

Gentler and Brighter

Instead of a gritty paste, air polishing (you may know it by the brand name Airflow) directs a fine jet of warm water, air and powder at your teeth. It lifts plaque and stain without scrubbing, gets in around implants, bridges and braces, and most patients find it more comfortable.

Dental plan members have it at every hygiene visit.

Periodontal Therapy

Gum Disease Care

Once gum disease affects the bone, treatment moves to staged deep cleaning beneath the gum line.

Assessment. We record pocket depths and take X-rays, then stage and grade your gums with the British Society of Periodontology system.
Deep cleaning in stages. One area of the mouth at a time, usually four in all, with local anaesthetic. £167 per stage.
Re-assessment. After a few months, we measure again to confirm healing.
Maintenance. Hygiene visits, frequently every three months, keep things stable. Plan B covers four each year.

Signs You Need a Hygiene Visit

Early gum disease rarely hurts, which is why regular visits matter even when you feel fine.

Bleeding Gums

Gums that bleed as you brush or floss are the commonest early sign of inflammation.

Bad Breath

If brushing doesn't freshen your breath, plaque beneath the gum line may be the cause.

Tartar Build-Up

Once plaque hardens, no brush will shift it; it needs a professional clean.

Receding Gums

Teeth looking longer, or sensitive where they meet the gum.

Implants, Bridges, Braces

The gum around them needs extra attention to stay healthy.

Pregnancy

Changing hormones can leave gums swollen and prone to bleeding.

Looking After Your Gums

Two minutes of brushing, twice daily, with a fluoride toothpaste
Daily cleaning in between the teeth, with interdental brushes if you can
Spit out after brushing but skip the rinse, leaving the fluoride to work
Thorough brushing is often easier with an electric toothbrush
Stopping smoking makes a real difference to your gums. Smoking can also mask the bleeding that signals gum disease

Your Gums and Your General Health

Gum disease and diabetes are linked both ways, with each making the other harder to manage. Healthy gums are part of your overall health, not only your teeth.

Let us know if you're pregnant, have diabetes or take a medicine that affects your gums, and we'll advise how often to come in.

Questions

Our hygiene guides go further.

How often should I see the hygienist?–
Most people come every three to six months; we'll recommend an interval once we've seen how healthy your gums are. With gum disease, three-monthly visits are usually best. For anyone with implants, including a full-arch bridge, we book a visit every three months, and our implant guarantee depends on keeping those four yearly appointments. At Comely Bank Dental, you'll see Katie Ventisei, our dental hygienist and therapist.
