IV Sedation Dentist in Edinburgh: Calm, Comfortable Care

We offer IV sedation here in Comely Bank, for longer implant surgery and for anyone who feels anxious at the dentist. Nervous patients are very welcome. You remain awake and able to respond, yet deeply relaxed, and most people recall little of it later.

£500 for a session of IV sedation, plus £250 for every extra 30 minutes.

Who It Helps

We always use sedation together with local anaesthetic, not in place of it.

Longer implant surgery, including full-arch treatment
Anxiety at the dentist, whether mild nerves or genuine fear
A strong tendency to gag
Combining several treatments in a single visit

When It May Not Be Suitable

We'll discuss this with you before anything is booked.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding
Certain medical conditions and medicines; your history is checked at assessment
If no adult is available to take you home

How It Works

This is conscious sedation, delivered through a small cannula placed in your hand or arm, with a trained team monitoring you from start to finish.

1

Assessment

We go through your medical history, check your blood pressure and talk about your worries, normally at your consultation.

2

Before the Day

You can eat a light meal first. An adult needs to come with you, stay while you're treated and see you home.

3

During Treatment

We monitor your breathing, pulse and oxygen levels throughout, and you can still respond when your dentist speaks to you.

4

Afterwards

Spend the day resting at home. For 24 hours, avoid driving, alcohol, using machinery and making important decisions.

What It Feels Like

Patients usually say they feel calm, warm and slightly sleepy. The time tends to fly by, and many recall little or none of the treatment later.

You'll still hear us, reply to questions and follow simple requests, such as opening a bit wider. Local anaesthetic numbs the treatment area in the usual way, so there's no pain.

Is it safe? Dental practices across the UK use conscious sedation widely. Throughout treatment, a trained team watches your breathing, pulse and oxygen levels, and emergency equipment is held on site, as in all dental practices.

Your Checklist for the Day

Have something light to eat a couple of hours ahead
Carry on with your normal medicines unless we've advised differently
Choose loose clothing with sleeves you can push up easily
Leave at least one fingernail free of varnish so the oxygen monitor can read
Come with an adult who'll take you home and, ideally, keep you company for the rest of the day
Arrange care for young children rather than bringing them along

Treatments Often Done with Sedation

If you're anxious, nearly any treatment can be carried out under sedation. These come up most often.

Full-Arch Implants

The implants for a whole arch placed in one longer appointment that feels much shorter.

Dental Implants

Single implants and bone grafts, if you'd prefer not to be fully aware.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Fitting the implants that will keep your denture secure.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth taken out surgically, a procedure many people dread.

Several Treatments at Once

Treatment grouped into fewer, longer appointments, so you visit less often.

Dental Anxiety

Fillings, root canal treatment or crowns that nerves have made you delay.

Will I be asleep?–
No. Conscious sedation is different from a general anaesthetic: you stay able to respond, but feel deeply relaxed. Afterwards, most people recall very little of their treatment.
