Dental Implant Costs

Implant quotes can differ by thousands of pounds for what sounds like the same treatment. Here I set out our fees, what each one pays for, and how to tell whether two quotes are really comparable.

The short answer

How Much Does a Dental Implant Cost in Edinburgh?

At Comely Bank Dental in Edinburgh, placing a single dental implant is £1,800 and the crown on top is £1,100, so a complete single-tooth implant is £2,900. The implant consultation is free, a 3D CT scan is £160 if you need one, and a bone graft is only added if the scan shows it is needed. Every fee is confirmed in a written treatment plan before treatment starts.

What Does a Dental Implant Cost at Comely Bank Dental?

A single dental implant at Comely Bank Dental costs £1,800 to place, and the crown that sits on it is £1,100. Together, one complete implant tooth is £2,900. The consultation is free, and if you need a 3D CT scan to plan treatment, it is £160.

What it's for Guide fee
Implant consultation Free
3D CT scan, if needed £160
Placing the implant £1,800
Crown on the implant £1,100
Implant and crown together £2,900
Small bone graft, only if needed £598
Larger bone graft, only if needed £998

These are guide prices. After your consultation you receive a written treatment plan with the fee for each stage, so you know the total before you agree to anything.

What Does the Fee Pay for, and What Might Be Extra?

The fees follow the two stages of treatment. The first is surgical: the implant is planned on your CT scan and placed through a 3D-printed surgical guide made for your mouth, using the MegaGen R2 guided surgery system. The second comes a few months later, once the implant has bonded with the bone: the crown is made and fitted.

Some items depend entirely on your mouth, so they are only added when you need them:

  • A CT scan (£160) to measure the bone in three dimensions. Most implant cases need one.
  • A bone graft (£598 or £998) if the scan shows too little bone. Many people don't need one.
  • Removing the tooth first, if it is still there. A surgical extraction is £450.
  • IV sedation, if you would prefer to be deeply relaxed during the procedure.
  • A temporary tooth while the implant heals, if the gap would show when you smile.

Your written plan lists each of these separately, so you can see exactly which apply to you and which don't.

What Do Dental Implants Cost Elsewhere in Edinburgh?

Among Edinburgh practices that publish their fees (October 2026), the lowest advertised price for a single implant ranges from about £1,200 to £4,400, and the middle half of those practices advertise between roughly £1,500 and £2,800.

Treat those numbers with care, because practices advertise different things. Some "from" prices cover only the implant, with the crown charged separately. Others include the crown. A few are introductory offers. Some include the CT scan and others don't mention it at all.

So a low headline figure can end up costing more than a higher one once the missing pieces are added back. The only fair comparison is total against total: the full cost of one finished tooth, from consultation to fitted crown, for your mouth.

Why Do Implant Quotes Differ So Much?

Five things account for most of the gap between one quote and another.

  • The implant system. Established manufacturers invest in research, precise engineering and parts that stay available for years. Lesser-known systems may cost less to buy but can be harder to service if a component needs replacing later. We use MegaGen AnyRidge implants.
  • How the implant is planned. A CT scan shows bone height and width and the position of nerves and sinuses. Planning on a scan and placing the implant through a guide built from that plan takes more preparation than working from a flat X-ray.
  • Who places it. Experience counts most when a case isn't straightforward. I have placed over 2,000 implants over more than ten years, with a success rate above 99% (from our practice records).
  • The crown. Materials and laboratories vary, and so does the method of attachment. A screw-retained crown can be removed for maintenance; a cemented crown usually can't be removed without cutting it off.
  • The guarantee. A long guarantee may depend on conditions, such as attending regular dental examinations and hygiene visits. Read the conditions, not just the headline.

How Do You Compare Two Implant Quotes?

Put the quotes side by side and check each of these points. If a quote doesn't answer one, ask before you decide.

  1. Does the price cover the implant, the connecting part (the abutment) and the crown, or only some of them?
  2. Is a CT scan included, charged separately, or not used at all?
  3. Is a bone graft likely in your case, and what would it cost?
  4. Is a temporary tooth provided while you heal?
  5. Which implant system will be used, and is it widely available in the UK?
  6. Who will place the implant, and who will fit the crown?
  7. Are review visits after surgery included?
  8. What does the guarantee cover, for how long, and on what conditions?
  9. Is the fee confirmed in writing, and how long is the quote valid?

A quote that answers all nine clearly is usually more reassuring than a cheaper one that leaves several unanswered.

What Does Replacing Several Teeth or an Arch Cost?

Replacing several teeth doesn't always mean one implant per tooth. Two implants can often support a bridge of three or four teeth, which usually costs less than an implant for each.

If you have lost most or all of the teeth in one jaw, there are two main implant options:

  • A fixed full-arch bridge on four implants (our Premium zirconia package can use as many as six), which stays in permanently. Full-arch implants here come in three packages from £12,500 per arch. Comely Bank Dental's full-arch price is below the typical published full-arch price in Edinburgh, and published full-arch fees in Edinburgh run from about £9,500 to £22,000 per arch.
  • Implant-retained dentures, where a denture clips onto two or more implants. You take it out to clean it, but it is far more secure than a conventional denture and usually costs considerably less than a fixed bridge.

Which suits you depends on your bone, your bite and how you feel about something removable. Both are planned on a CT scan.

Are There Costs After the Implant Is Fitted?

An implant can't decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up, much like gum disease around a natural tooth. Looking after it is part of the real cost.

  • Dental examinations and hygiene visits. Regular reviews, plus professional cleaning every three months, keep the tissue around the implant healthy, and those hygiene visits are a condition of the implant guarantee. A hygiene visit is £90, so allow for four a year.
  • A night guard if you grind or clench, to protect the crown. A night guard is £220.
  • A new crown eventually. The implant is designed to stay for the long term, but the crown on top wears like any other crown.

Our dental plan includes routine care, and members save 10% on most private treatment.

Can You Get Dental Implants on the NHS in Scotland?

Rarely. NHS implant treatment in Scotland is generally limited to hospital services and specific situations, such as teeth lost through cancer treatment or serious injury, or some people born without certain teeth. For most adults, implants are private treatment wherever you go.

At our practice, adults are seen privately and the children of our dental plan members are seen under the NHS.

What Happens at a Free Implant Consultation?

At an implant consultation here in Comely Bank, I examine the gap and the teeth around it, ask what matters most to you, and explain every realistic option, including ones that don't involve implants, such as a bridge or a denture. If an implant looks suitable, the next step is usually a CT scan so I can measure the bone and plan the implant's exact position.

You then receive a written treatment plan with the fee for each stage. There is no obligation to go ahead, and you are welcome to take it away and compare it with other quotes.

Questions

Is the implant price per tooth?–
For a single missing tooth, yes: £2,900 covers one implant and its crown. If several neighbouring teeth are missing, a bridge on two implants may replace three or four teeth for less than an implant for each, so the fee depends on the design we agree.
Why are the implant and the crown priced separately?+
Does the dental plan reduce the cost of implants?+
