Invisalign or Braces?
Most adults who ask me about straightening their teeth want to settle one thing first: clear aligners or train-track braces? Both move teeth well when they're used for the right case, so the better choice depends on your teeth, your bite and how you live day to day.
Is Invisalign or Braces Better for Adults in Edinburgh?
For most adults with mild to moderate crowding, gaps or bite problems, Invisalign and fixed braces can achieve a similar result, and at Comely Bank Dental in Edinburgh Invisalign is from £3,000. Fixed braces are often the better choice for some complex tooth movements, or if you doubt you'd wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, and in those cases we refer you to an orthodontist.
Which Is Better for Adults, Invisalign or Fixed Braces?
For most adults with mild to moderate crowding, spacing or bite problems, Invisalign and fixed braces can produce a very similar result. The difference is in how you get there. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. Fixed braces are brackets bonded to your teeth and joined by a wire, and they stay put until treatment ends.
Invisalign tends to suit adults who care how they look at work, want to keep eating normally and keep cleaning simple, and are confident they'll wear the aligners as prescribed. Fixed braces tend to suit more complex tooth movements, and people who would rather not be responsible for wearing something every day.
At Comely Bank Dental we provide Invisalign. If your teeth would be better served by fixed braces, I'll tell you so at your consultation and refer you to an orthodontist, rather than fit aligners to a case they don't suit.
How Do Invisalign and Fixed Braces Compare?
Here's how the two compare on the points adults ask me about most.
| Feature | Invisalign | Fixed braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear aligners, hard to spot at conversational distance. Small tooth-coloured attachments may sit on some teeth. | Metal brackets are obvious. Ceramic, tooth-coloured brackets are less noticeable but still visible. |
| Comfort | Pressure for a day or two with each new set. Smooth plastic, so little rubbing of the cheeks and lips. | Soreness after each adjustment. Brackets and wire ends can rub the lips and cheeks at first. |
| Food | Aligners come out to eat, so there's nothing you can't eat. Only plain water while they're in. | Stay in to eat. Hard, sticky and chewy foods can break brackets, so some foods are best avoided. |
| Hygiene | Brush and floss as normal. Clean your teeth before the aligners go back in. | Harder to clean around brackets. Needs extra brushes and more time. |
| Discipline needed | High. Aligners only work while you're wearing them. | Low day to day, because they can't come out. You still need to attend adjustments and wear any elastics. |
| Speed | Similar to braces for many mild to moderate cases. | Similar for many cases. Can be more predictable for larger movements. |
| Complex movements | Handles a wide range, but some movements are less predictable. | Generally the more predictable option for severe rotations, large bite corrections and closing big spaces. |
Neither column wins outright. The right answer depends on your particular teeth, and that can only be judged after an examination.
Not Sure Which Suits You?

What Is Day-to-Day Life Like with Each?
With Invisalign, your routine changes in small ways. You take the aligners out to eat or to drink anything other than plain water, clean your teeth, then put them back. That means carrying a case and a travel toothbrush, and fewer long, grazing lunches or all-afternoon coffees. Most people settle into it within a couple of weeks. Your speech may sound slightly different for the first few days while your tongue adapts.
With fixed braces, there's nothing to remember to put in, but meals need more thought. Biting straight into an apple or a crusty roll, chewing toffee or ice, and nibbling pens can all knock a bracket loose. Cleaning takes longer, too: interdental brushes and careful brushing around each bracket become part of every evening.
With either, you'll be seen regularly. Invisalign reviews are typically every six to ten weeks, with aligners issued in batches between visits. Fixed braces usually need an adjustment appointment every six to eight weeks.
Is Invisalign Faster Than Braces?
Not reliably. Adult Invisalign treatment commonly takes six to eighteen months, and fixed braces often take a year to two years, but that comparison is misleading: the braces figure includes more complex cases that aligners wouldn't be used for. For a like-for-like case, the difference is usually small.
Two things genuinely affect speed with Invisalign:
- Wear time. Aligners left out for several hours a day slow progress, and teeth may stop following the plan, which means more refinement aligners.
- Case selection. A case at the limit of what aligners do well may need several rounds of refinements, by which point fixed braces may have been the quicker route.
At your consultation, the 3D scan lets us estimate the likely number of aligners and treatment length before you commit. Treat that as a guide rather than a promise, because results vary.
What Can Invisalign Treat Well in Adults?
Modern aligners, combined with attachments, gentle reshaping between teeth and sometimes elastics, can handle a wide range of adult problems:
- mild to moderate crowding
- gaps between teeth
- teeth that have drifted since braces as a teenager, often because retainers stopped being worn
- many overbites, underbites and crossbites of mild to moderate degree
- straightening teeth before cosmetic work, so less tooth needs to be prepared
That last point is often overlooked. If you're considering composite bonding or veneers to disguise crooked teeth, aligning them first often allows a more conservative result.
I've been an Invisalign Diamond Apex Provider every year from 2022 to 2026, which places me in the top 1% of Invisalign providers in Europe. That brings experience across a wide range of cases, but it doesn't change which cases aligners suit. Honest case selection matters more than the badge.
When Are Fixed Braces the Better Choice?
I'd usually recommend fixed braces, and refer you to an orthodontist, when treatment involves:
- severe rotations, particularly of rounded teeth such as premolars and lower canines, which aligners can struggle to grip
- large vertical movements, such as bringing a tooth down into the bite
- closing large spaces after teeth have been removed, where the roots must move a long way and stay upright
- significant differences in jaw size, especially where jaw surgery may be part of the plan
- buried teeth, such as a canine that needs to be surgically uncovered and guided into place
- a history of not wearing removable appliances, because aligners only work when they're worn
Some cases are best treated with a combination, such as fixed braces for the difficult phase and aligners to finish, and an orthodontist can advise on that.
A referral isn't a failed consultation. If fixed braces are the right tool, starting with them saves you months of aligners that might not deliver.
How Do the Costs Compare?
At Comely Bank Dental, Invisalign is from £3,000. Your final fee depends on how complex your case is and is confirmed in a written treatment plan before anything starts. Refinement aligners and Vivera retainers are included, so the fee covers the whole course of treatment and your retainers, not just the first set of aligners.
We don't provide fixed braces, so if we refer you, the orthodontic practice sets its own fees. As a broad guide, private fixed braces for adults in Edinburgh often cost a similar amount to Invisalign for a comparable case. Ceramic brackets usually cost more than metal, and braces fitted behind the teeth cost more again.
Whichever you choose, check what a quote includes. Retainers, replacement retainers, extra visits and repairs to breakages can all be charged separately. Our guide prices are on the fees page.
Do You Need Retainers After Either Treatment?
Yes. Teeth tend to drift back towards where they started, and that tendency lasts for life, not just the first few months. Whether your teeth were straightened with aligners or braces, retainers are what keep the result.
Retention usually means a removable retainer worn at night, a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth, or both. With Invisalign at Comely Bank Dental, Vivera retainers are included. They're made from a durable clear material and supplied as a set, so you have a spare if one is lost or wears out.
If you had braces as a teenager and your teeth have since moved, you're far from unusual. Relapse after earlier orthodontic treatment is one of the most common reasons adults come to see me, and it's often a straightforward aligner case.
Who Should Wait Before Starting Either?
Moving teeth in an unhealthy mouth can do harm, whatever the appliance. Before either treatment you need:
- healthy gums. Active gum disease can speed up bone loss once teeth start moving, so it must be treated and stable first. Our hygiene team can help with that.
- no active decay, with any fillings or root canal treatment completed
- realistic expectations. Straightening changes the position of teeth, not their colour or the shape of worn edges.
If you've lost bone around your teeth from past gum disease, straightening may still be possible, but it needs careful planning and close monitoring. That's one reason an in-person examination comes before any decision.
How Will We Help You Decide?
Your free Invisalign consultation at our Comely Bank practice, a few minutes' walk from Stockbridge, starts with a conversation about what bothers you about your teeth. I'll examine your teeth and gums, take X-rays if they're needed, and take a 3D scan with our iTero scanner. From that scan we can show you a simulation of how your teeth could move with Invisalign, on screen, at the same visit.
If Invisalign is a good fit, you'll leave with a written plan and fee. If fixed braces would serve you better, I'll explain why and arrange a referral to an orthodontist in Edinburgh. Either way, you'll know your options before you decide anything.
