Composite Bonding Cost

Composite bonding is one of the most affordable ways to change the shape of your smile, but a per-tooth price is only the start. Here's what a realistic total looks like, what pushes it up or down, and what it costs to keep bonding looking good.

The short answer

How Much Does Composite Bonding Cost in Edinburgh?

At Comely Bank Dental, composite bonding is £300 per tooth, and most people have four to ten teeth treated, often after professional home whitening at £450. Among Edinburgh practices that publish their fees, per-tooth prices run from roughly £100 to £350. The bonding consultation is free, and your exact fee is confirmed in a written treatment plan before anything starts.

What Does Composite Bonding Cost per Tooth?

Composite bonding at our practice is £300 per tooth. That's a guide price: your exact fee is set out in a written treatment plan and agreed before any treatment starts, and the bonding consultation itself is free.

Because the fee is per tooth, the total depends mostly on how many teeth you have treated. A chip or a small gap might involve one or two teeth. If the aim is to change the overall look of your smile, most people have between four and ten upper teeth bonded, so the shape and colour match from one side to the other.

Many people also whiten their teeth first. On its own, professional home whitening is £450, and it's included in our bonding packages. Put simply, the two biggest factors in your plan are how many teeth and whether you whiten.

What Makes the Total Higher or Lower?

Beyond the number of teeth, a few things shape the final figure.

  • Whitening first. Composite is matched to the colour of your teeth on the day it's placed, and it won't lighten afterwards. If you'd like a brighter shade, whitening has to come first.
  • How much each tooth needs. Closing a small gap or rebuilding a worn corner uses less composite and less chair time than covering the whole front of a tooth.
  • Remedial work. Decay, inflamed gums or leaking old fillings need treating before cosmetic work, so a hygiene visit at £90 or a filling may be part of your plan.
  • Old bonding. Replacing bonding done elsewhere means carefully removing it first, which adds time.
  • Your bite. If teeth are crowded or meet edge to edge, a short course of Invisalign beforehand can mean less composite and a longer-lasting result, though it adds to the overall cost.

We explain each of these at your consultation, so nothing in the written plan comes as a surprise.

Edge or Full-Face Bonding: What's the Difference?

Edge bonding adds composite to the biting edges of the front teeth. It repairs chips, lengthens teeth that have worn down and evens out a slightly uneven line. Most of the tooth's natural surface is left untouched.

Full-face bonding, sometimes called composite veneers, covers the whole visible front of the tooth. It can mask discolouration, change the shape more noticeably and close larger gaps. It takes longer to build up and polish, and there's more composite to look after over the years.

Some practices charge less for a small edge repair than for full-face work. Our guide price is £300 per tooth, and your treatment plan confirms the fee for exactly what you're having. If edge bonding alone would give you the result you want, we'll tell you. There's no reason to cover more tooth than you need to.

How Do the Bonding Packages Work?

For people who want to change the look of their whole smile, we offer packages that combine bonding with professional home whitening.

Package Teeth usually included Guide price
Four teeth with whitening The two front teeth and the incisors beside them from £300 per tooth plus whitening at £450
Six teeth with whitening Canine to canine from £300 per tooth plus whitening at £450
Eight teeth with whitening Canine to canine plus the first premolars from £300 per tooth plus whitening at £450
Ten teeth with whitening Eight teeth plus the second premolars from £300 per tooth plus whitening at £450

Six teeth takes in the canines, which matter more than people expect because they set the visible width of your smile. Eight and ten suit smiles that show a lot of teeth towards the cheeks.

Your package fee is confirmed in writing at your consultation. You can read more about the treatment itself on our composite bonding page.

What Do Other Practices in Edinburgh Charge?

Among Edinburgh practices that publish their fees (October 2026), the lowest advertised price for composite bonding ranges from about £100 to £350 per tooth. The middle half of practices sit between roughly £160 and £260.

Those figures are useful, but they don't always compare like with like:

  • They're "from" prices, which may only apply to a small edge repair.
  • Some include whitening, a review appointment or polishing, and many don't.
  • Not every practice publishes its fees, so the range isn't a complete picture.

The more useful question is what you'll pay in total for the result you want, and what that figure includes. Ask any practice, including us, to put it in writing.

What Does Bonding Cost to Look After?

Bonding isn't quite a one-off cost. Composite is softer than enamel and slowly picks up surface stain, so it needs a little maintenance.

  • Polishing. A polish at your regular hygiene visit keeps the surface smooth and glossy.
  • Small repairs. Chipped edges are the most common problem, and they can usually be fixed by adding composite rather than starting again.
  • A night guard. If you clench or grind, a night guard at £220 protects your bonding while you sleep.
  • Top-up whitening. If you whitened first, an occasional top-up keeps your natural teeth close to the shade of the composite.

Our dental plan spreads routine care costs across the year, and members save 10% on most private treatment.

How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

With good care, composite bonding typically lasts around four to eight years before it needs significant refurbishment or replacement, and small repairs along the way are normal. Results vary from person to person.

What shortens its life:

  • grinding, clenching, or biting nails, pens or ice
  • smoking, red wine, coffee and tea, which stain the surface
  • a bite where the front teeth meet edge to edge

What helps:

  • regular dental examinations and hygiene visits
  • a night guard if you grind
  • not biting straight into very hard food with your front teeth

When bonding does need replacing, the cost per tooth is usually similar to having it done in the first place. That's worth bearing in mind when you compare bonding with porcelain veneers, which cost more at the start but generally last longer.

Who Is Bonding Not the Right Choice For?

Bonding is a good fit for many people, but not everyone.

  • Heavy grinders can break or wear composite quickly, so porcelain, or bonding plus a guard, may be wiser.
  • Crowded or crooked teeth can sometimes be disguised with bonding, but it usually means adding bulk. Straightening first is often better.
  • Very dark or heavily filled teeth may not be masked well by composite.
  • Active decay or gum disease must be treated first.
  • If you're mainly unhappy with the colour, whitening alone may be all you need, for much less than bonding several teeth.

We'll tell you honestly if a different option suits you better, including leaving well alone.

What Happens at a Free Bonding Consultation?

Your bonding consultation at our Comely Bank practice in north Edinburgh is free, and there's no obligation to go ahead. We'll:

  • check your teeth, gums and bite to make sure bonding is suitable
  • take photographs, and an iTero digital scan where it helps
  • talk through the shape, length and shade you'd like
  • explain whether edge bonding, full-face bonding or a package suits you best
  • give you a written treatment plan with every fee set out

If you haven't had a dental examination for a while, we may suggest an examination first, so that any problems are dealt with before cosmetic work begins.

Questions

Is composite bonding cheaper than veneers?–
Per tooth, yes. Bonding is £300 per tooth, while porcelain veneers start from £800. Porcelain generally lasts longer and resists staining better, so over ten years or more the gap narrows, particularly if bonding needs replacing along the way.
